2012 Fall Wine Festival September 15

Here in Nuyaka, Oklahoma, the year has just flown by... in spite of the terribly hot days we thought would never end!

Our festival is the 3rd Saturday in September and will be on the 15th this year. We are looking forward to seeing old friends and customers along with new friends and customers. We will have a fun filled day with wine tasting and music. Plus, we have made some improvements to the grounds that we are eager to show you.

We harvested our wine grapes early due to the extremes of our weather, but got a fairly nice crop. The weather has been hard on all the plants and a much needed rain came recently. It didn’t last long enough for us but it saved watering for the day. You can almost see the plants and birds smiling with relief.

Our hearts and prayers go out to all the folks that have been affected by the fires throughout our state. Remember them and the firefighters, many volunteers, who worked so hard to save so many lives and homes.

Stop by the winery and enjoy the fun on Saturday, September 15, 2012. We will be pouring a wide variety of made-in-Oklahoma wines and Pete will be doing vineyard tours. Map to Winery

Okmulgee County has repaired the old Deep Fork River bridge leading to our winery. The two old wooden bridges here are probably the oldest bridges in the state of Oklahoma. Visit for the winery, stay for the lesson on construction history.

This high water river crossing over the Deep Fork River has been closed for the last couple of years, so we are very pleased to have it open again. Vehicles less than three tons each ONLY (seriously). To learn more about Nuyaka Creek Winery or to print the map just stop by www.nuyakacreek.com. We would love to have you over to the house for visit!

Grape Ranch Winery Chooses Texas Over Oklahoma

Jack & Dan Whiteman founded Grape Ranch Winery in the sleepy little town of Okemah, Oklahoma nearly ten years ago. The winery bought grapes from California and bottled the wine here at their popular live music event venue.

Located in eastern Oklahoma on the North Canadian River, Grape Ranch was unique in offering multi-day events with camping on site. Sadly, the owners announced this week that Grape Ranch Winery will be moving to Texas.

The Whiteman family is likely to find a friendly regulatory environment in Texas and it is closer to their home. Currently, Oklahoma does not allow direct shipments to consumers. Only small producers can sell directly to liquor stores and restaurants. Texas also allows wine products to be sold in grocery stores.

One assumes their "Beat Texas" wine will not be their main product going forward.

Bumper Crop of Wild Cherries at Nuyaka Creek Winery

Nuyaka Creek Winery reports a bumper crop on their big old wild cherry tree. Wild Cherries, AKA Chokecherries, are high on flavor and in antioxidant pigment compounds but very low on sugar. Long ago, the chokecherry was a staple of the Native American diet. Later, European settlers began to use chokecherries in the northern Plains. They used the choke cherry or bird cherry for jam, jelly, wine, and syrup.

This year's heavier than usual summer rains appear to have pumped up production enough to warrant a batch of Cherry Berry Wine. Hopefully, a little bit of this Oklahoma wild cherry and blackberry wine will be available for an early taste at the annual Fall Wine Festival on September 18, 2010 (Winefest Flyer PDF). Nuyaka Creek Winery is bringing you a taste of history to celebrate their 10th annual Fall winefest! See you there!
