The Oklahoma Grape Growers and Wine Makers Association has created a similar Oklahoma winery map.
Both are nice efforts, though I still long for the day we have one map site that can get you all of the driving direction you need to hit several Oklahoma wineries in a single trip.
These maps are very helpful as they show you which ones are close enough to another to create your own custom wine trail road trip.

Learning How Wine Fights Cancer
New discoveries show a possible mechanism for the anti-cancer activity of a compound found in red wine widely reported to provide its known health benefits.

The discovery has important implications for increasing the effectiveness of cancer therapy, with some clinical trials using resveratrol already showing encouraging results.
But it could also explain how resveratrol helps to control atherosclerosis, heart disease, arthritis, and autoimmune disorders, say the researchers.
Marty Mayo, assistant professor of biochemistry and molecular genetics at the University of Virginia, and his team report that the compound helps to starve cancer cells by inhibiting the action of a key protein that feeds them. The protein, called nuclear factor- kappa B (NF-kB), is found in the nucleus of all cells and activates genes responsible for cell survival.

Anita Campbell's insightful weblog Small Business Trends is an invaluable resource for family wineries in Oklahoma. I visit it regularly to keep up-to-date with the latest trends and technologies that are available to help small businesses compete. Case in point, her recent article on blogging for agritourism.
Oklahoma's emerging wine industry in not merely a beverage manufacturing industry. If it were, there would be little hope for family wineries vineyards in Oklahoma to survive in a Gallo-dominated market. However, the real business model is one of tourism, not manufacturing. This is why we are going to be seeing more and more web sites and blogs maintained by the families that own Oklahoma wineries. It is simply the fastest, cheapest way to get the word out and attract new business.

Supreme Court to Rule on Wine Shipments Across State Lines
The Supreme Court - It's Not Just for Choosing Presidents Anymore
The Supreme Court today agreed to decide whether states can ban direct shipments of wine to consumers from out-of-state wineries. Acting on cases from Michigan and New York, the justices will try to resolve conflicting appeals court rulings on state bans on such shipments. In one case, a U.S. appeals court struck down Michigan's direct shipment ban. But a different appeals court upheld New York's ban. Thirty-six states had asked the Supreme Court to settle the issue, the Associated Press reported. At issue is the system of alcohol distribution under which out-of-state wine producers may sell only to wholesalers, who distribute to retailers, who in turn sell to consumers. About half of the states prohibit direct shipments to consumers. States argue that the 21st Amendment, which repealed Prohibition, gave states the power to regulate the sale and distribution of alcoholic beverages.

The Claremore Chamber of Commerce and Claremore Main Street are partnering together for an entertaining fund-raiser with a unique taste of Oklahoma on Saturday, June 5 at the Claremore Expo Center, 400 Veterans Parkway. It will be Claremore's kick-off event for the Route 66 International Festival.

Richard and Rose Kennedy of Tres Suenos Vineyard & Winery at Luther, Oklahoma also celebrated major improvements to their operation with a Grand Opening. According to Charlie from VinoGlo a beautiful day, good wine and food a plenty... made the event a wonderful success.

The concept of presenting springtime and autumn Oklahoma Producers Dinners was created by chef Kurt Fleischfresser and partner Chris Lower at The Coach House two years ago. The menus traditionally highlight the foods of Oklahoma that Fleischfresser uses on his daily menus at the Nichols Hills restaurant as well as at sister restaurants The Metro and Irma's Burger Shack.
For this spring producers' dinner, at least eight Oklahoma family-owned operations provided food served during the four-course evening meal. Several of the producers were present at the dinner to answer questions about their food operations.
...Wines included a 1999 Trellis Chardonnay from Sonoma, Calif., and a 1998 Miner Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley, Calif.

Winemakers usually say that grape quality is the number one component in making great wines. One way to influence grape quality is for growers to embrace canopy management (CM) practices.
The most noted book on wine grape canopy management, Sunlight into Wine by Dr. Richard Smart, can be quite hard to find. Luckily, you can find some great infomration on the web. Cluster thinning is a MUST for some peculiar varieties that have very fruitful primary buds and tend to produce 3 clusters per shoot. Examples include Seyval, Chancellor, Vidal, and Chambourcin. Among these varieties, some also have fruitful secondary and base buds, which in turn produce several clusters per shoot. Seyval and Chancellor are good examples. These 2 varieties still produce a normal crop after losing their primary buds to cold injury. Other varieties, however, do not require cluster thinning. Examples include Chardonel, Traminette, Norton (Cynthiana), Vignoles, and Frontenac.

The last cold spell of Spring drastically reduced attendence at this year's Nuyaka Creek WineFest. Thanks to all of you who did brave dire forecasts to celebrate with us! Many new vendors made it this year and a new band... The Flashbacks. 2004 Oklahoma Spring Wine Festival pictures are here!
Due to the low turnout, there are still some fine rooted Merlot grape vines for sale. These premium cuttings are leafing out nicely now. Bring Mom by the winery this Sunday for a Mother's Day treat and grab yourself the makings of a backyard vineyard while you are here.
Those attending got to enjoy some great gourmet cheeses imported to Oklahoma by Council Creek Cheese. I could not resist taking home a wonderfully creamy, soft, goat's milk cheese called Dorathea and a wedge of Spanish Malagon with Rosemary. We stoked up a comforting fire, poured 30 different wines and enjoyed what turned out to be a pretty nice day despite the grim forecasts. Hope to see you all at this Fall's wine festival September 18, 2004.

Westlake Made-in-Oklahoma Wine Festival May 15
Oklahoma Wine and Cheeses at Westlake Recreation Area
May 15, 2004 from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM (at the earliest)
The Westlake Recreation Area is 2 miles West of Lahoma or 10 minutes West of Enid.
Come spend the day tasting wines and cheeses from several sources. See other products from a variety of unique Oklahoma businesses.
Try to visit each participating Oklahoma winery's booth, at your leisure, sometime during the day. They will be glad to share with you information about their winery and their particular selection of wines. Recent changes in Oklahoma law make it legal to buy wine directly from the participants at the festival.
The number of the Made in Oklahoma vendors planning to attend is still increasing. We hope to have many with a wide variety of MIO products here. Please visit them as well throughout the day $5.00 at the gate for the whole day.
Changes in Oklahoma law provide that, starting on November 1, 2003, unopened bottles of wine can be purchased at wine festivals.

Just a few block from MayFest you will find an Arts and Humanities Council of Tulsa event open to all Tulsa artists. Visitors making their way to downtown Tulsa's Blue Dome area will find a diverse selection of work from local artists and maybe even a taste or two of Oklahoma wines.
Interested in exhiting your own work? The event is open to all Tulsa artists. There will be no entry fee, or jurying, you just show up ready to display and sell your artwork, and bring something yummy to eat for the Friday evening opening.
