The Oklahoman on Okemah's Grape Ranch Winery

Grape Ranch Vision - Marketing Approachable Wines in Nontraditional Ways

Tricia Pemberton writer for The (Daily) Oklahoman has written a very informative article on The Grape Ranch in Okemah.

The ranch's California-style tasting room -- atop a ridge overlooking a pecan orchard and the North Canadian River -- draws visitors from across Oklahoma and surrounding states. The tasting room is open from 10 a.m. until dusk daily except for New Year's Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

The ranch's facilities also are available for private parties and weddings.

Grape Ranch annually hosts the Bud Break party, celebrating the annual renewal of the vineyard; the Woody Guthrie Folk Festival in mid-July; and the Red Dirt Harvest Festival on Labor Day weekend. -- Made in Oklahoma: Grape Ranch from NewsOk.com

There are lots more interesting tidbits about The Grape Ranch in her full article. However, you may need to register (free) to view the full online article content.

If you haven't visited this lovely Oklahoma vineyard yet, I heartily reccomend you check them out. Their pecan grove location and large impressive vineyard is simply stunning in the Spring and Fall. The wines are still California musts that are only aged in Oklahoma, but 2007 promises a wine from their Sauvignon Blanc vines. If their grape growing matches their marketing savvy, it should be a spectacular release.

New Recipe from Deer Creek Vineyard in Edmond, OK

Not much wine news to report these days, everyone appears to be struggling their way through the busy Christmas season in Oklahoma. I have noticed that many of the Oklahoma wineries have added some great content to their sites.

Oklahoma Wineries Christmas Updates

At Okemah's Grape Ranch, the holiday is even tougher as they deal with both Christmas and Festivus. You can see their latest TV Ad on their website. (http://www.graperanch.com/)

Deer Creek Vineyard, Edmond's first winery, has published an interesting looking recipe for Blackberry Wine Cake on their website (http://www.deercreekvineyard.com). Dianne and I love trying out new recipes from Oklahoma wineries. We watch the local wine event calendars for chances to taste their special creations, then grab the best recipes from their websites.

Wakefield Country Inn & Vineyard, near Calvin Oklahoma, also shares great Oklahoma recipes on their winery webpage (http://www.wakefieldcountryinn.com).

Lincoln County Voters Approve Liquor-by-the-Drink

Big Win for Lincoln County Wine Grape Growers

Tuesday, Lincoln County became the 45th county in the state to authorize the sale of liquor by the drink. The issue was approved by 1,752 (54.6 percent) to 1,457 (45.4 percent).

Don Neal, president of the Lincoln County Grape Growers Association (LCGGA), said although his group was responsible for getting the measure on the ballot, little time or money was spent by the membership promoting the effort.

Don said that LCGGA distributed no handbills and only purchased one newspaper advertisement. It sure sounds like the voters of Lincoln County were ready for a change!

Some counties restrict the sale of alcohol in restaurants on Sundays and holidays, but the Lincoln County ballot question allows it to be sold seven days a week.

Lincoln County Voters to Decide Local Wine Laws Dec. 13, 2005

Oklahoma Liquor-by-the-Drink Special Election This Tuesday

Voters in Lincoln County will decide Dec. 13 whether to allow alcoholic beverages to be sold at their local restaurants.

County commissioners called the special Liquor-by-the-Drink election in September when members of the Lincoln County Grape Growers Association (LCGGA) agreed to pay the $6,500-$7,000 in costs associated with taking this issue to the people.

I personally know many of the family farmers that make up the LCGGA and I can tell you that the money for this election won't come to them easily. Don Neal, the president of the Lincoln County Grape Growers Association, says that little old Lincoln County Oklahoma is now home to 30 percent of the Oklahoma's wineries. He has been spreading the word about how important Oklahoma wine could be for the economic development for Lincoln County and the entire Sooner State.

I hope the voters of Lincoln county turn out to support their local wine industry. Anyone interested in how the Oklahoma wine industry is growing in their own part of the state, should grab one of the 2006 Oklahoma Wineries Calendars and see what local wine events are planned in the area.
