First Legal Oklahoma Distillery Raises Spirits in OKC

Old Russian Recipe - New Oklahoma Vodka

Computer analyst Marc Spain is the president of Old Russia Distillery and Spirits. Along with his business partners Gary Robinson and Bret Stacy, Marc produces Metore's Russian Heritage Grain Vodka. Shockingly, the ultra-premium vodka they create is made right here in Oklahoma! Yes, that's right the new Oklahoma distillery is called Old Russia Distillery!

Old Russia's ultra-premium vodka is created in small batches of high ethanol spirits that are filtered many more times than most competing vodka's. The Russian family vodka recipe which led to Metore's was originally used for turning the poor quality Russian 'state' vodka into a smooth quaffing drink of the highest quality. The processed involved using various filters and distillation equipment. When the old family process was brought to Oklahoma the result was a bronze medal in the San Francisco World Spirits Competition. Not too shabby for Year One of the Oklahoma Distilling Industry!

Metore's Vodka holds anywhere from three to 10 taste testings each month at various private parties, bars and liquor stores across the state. Who knows you may even read about a few of them here!

Dianne and I grabbed ourselves a fifth of Metore's Russian Heritage Grain Vodka at Parklane Liquor in Tulsa for around $27 this weekend, but it is available all over the state. Old Russia's laborious filtering process does indeed yield and incredibly smooth vodka...easily comparable to Stoli, our old favorite. Vodka aficionados wishing to try Metore's Ultra Premium Vodka will have to visit our fair state for the luxury. As Oklahoma winemakers will tell you, there are many export hurdles to jump to sell Oklahoma alcohol on the world market.

The Future of Oklahoma Vodka

Future plans for this Oklahoma distiller include creating a more diverse line of single-grain vodkas, such as a rye vodka or a wheat vodka. Old Russia Distillery also plans to start making ultra-premium gin and brandy. Although Brandy is the spirit of choice in our house, I am quite excited to try their rye. In my younger days, I used to enjoy the slightly 'bready' flavor of a locally produced rye beverage.

Starting a distillery in Oklahoma is a bold move. Oklahoma Wine News salutes the pioneers at Old Russia Distillery & Spirits and we wish them the best of luck.

Tulsa Midtown Rotary Wine Tasting Event April 1, 2006

Tulsa Midtown Rotary Wine Fest Set for April 1, 2006

The Tulsa Midtown Rotary Club has set it's first annual Wine Fest for April 1, 2006 at the Holiday Inn Select which is located at I-44 and Yale Avenue in Tulsa. This will be a fundraiser for the Rotary Club and we hope to bring representatives from all Oklahoma Wineries and representatives from Cheese manufacturers and Bread stores to display and sell their products. The Rotary Club will also present awards to the best wines in several categories and hope to provide the Tulsa area with the largest and best Wine Festival in Oklahoma.

Vendors wishing to reserve booth space, should contact Joe McCormick at 918-488-8000 or e-mail him at: josephmccormick@mindspring.com

Since this is their first winefest the Rotarians would also like to hear comments telling them how we can make this Wine Fest a good experience for wineries and visitors alike. Also, if this date conflicts with any other Wine Fests, they would like to know as soon as possible.

Great Oklahoma Tastes to Celebrate the Holidays

Thanksgiving in Oklahoma

Our family likes to eat & drink locally whenever possible - some might call us locavores. Just don't call us late for dinner! Naturally, our recent shopping has been with eye toward the impending holidays. This is the time of year when I traditionally lobby for the untraditional, the irrational...the turducken.

What culinary symbol of American bounty could compare to The Holiday Turducken? A turkey stuffed with a duck, stuffed with a chicken, each layer married with layers of succulent dressing. Nothing exceeds like excess!

You could make it all yourself, but here's an Oklahoma food tip: Hebert’s Specialty Meats in Tulsa makes a great Turduchen, ready for your oven!

Hebert's Tulsa, like the store in Houston, utilizes recipes and guidance from Hebert's in Maurice, Louisiana to create a diverse ensemble of specialty stuffed meats. Call or drop Hebert's an email and you can pick up your turducken ready-to-cook or have it shipped. http://www.hebertsmeats.com/

Home just got a whole lot spicier! Of course, this begs the question: What Oklahoma wine do you serve with your Oklahoma turducken? Some folks recommend a bold and spicy Cabernet; others suggest a complex Merlot or fruity Sauvignon Blanc. Although it is not my custom to make wine pairing suggestions, I will make an exception for the holidays and recommend all three (not inserted inside one another). Remember the theme: nothing exceeds like excess!

Happy Holidays!
