Bob Johnson's Wine Lines Toasts Oklahoma Wineries

Oklahoma - home to a blossoming wine industry

Veteran wine writer Bob Johnson has some encouraging words about the state of Oklahoma's wine industry. Here's a little taste of what he had to say:

Some surprisingly good wine is being made in Oklahoma, where the land historically has been used for cattle grazing and such agricultural products as cotton, wheat and peanuts — but certainly not wine grapes.

Modern technology has changed that, however, and in certain pockets where appropriate soils and climate converge, a wine industry is blossoming.

Let's visit seven of the pioneering, promising estates... - Bob Johnson

He goes on to discuss Okie vintners: Stone Bluff Cellars Inn & Winery, Tidal School Vineyards, Moonfeathers Winery, Cimarron Cellars, Nuyaka Creek Winery, and Cabin Creek Vineyard.

New Four Year Degree Program in Winemaking

Cornell University in New York Offers Four Year Degree in Winemaking

The horticulturists at Cornell have been doing grape growing research since the crush vehicles were wagons. In fact, they have created a wealth of juice varieties, table grape hybrids and wine grapes since 1906. They have also noticed the rapid increase in the number of family wineries being established in Oklahoma and all over the country.

Nationally, about 37-hundred wineries, many of them small family-owned operations, fuel a wine industry that brings in 23 billion dollars annually. (Associated Press Story)

The result of this rapid industry growth has been a shortage of qualified people to manage vineyards and wineries. This has led to Cornell University to starting the new four-year undergraduate majors in viticulture and enology. It is the first grape growing and winemaking program of its kind east of the West Coast.

New York is opening their wine markets for consumers and winemakers alike, while investing in their state's educational infrastructure. The plan is to make New York's wine tourism industry continue to be an engine of economic growth and improved real estate values for its citizens.

I have to wonder what the leaders of Oklahoma plan to do to benefit from this rapid industry growth?

Gewurztraminer with an Oklahoma Accent

Heard it Through the Grapevine

I've heard that Woods and Waters Winery has released a 2004 Gewurztraminer (guh-VERTS-trah-mee-ner). Not too many Oklahoma vintners are bottling this most distinctive if unpronounceable wine grape.

Has anyone tasted it yet?

If so, drop me a comment. It may be a while before I can make it to Caddo County.

Enjoy Either Work or Play at an Oklahoma Winery

It is Wine Grape Harvest Festival Season in Oklahoma!

There is plenty of fun going on this weekend for Oklahoma wine lovers. The biggest event will, of course, be the 2005 Nuyaka Creek Winery Harvest Festival on Sept 17. From Noon until 7pm the public is invited to stop by the vineyard for food, fun and great wine. As usual parking and admission are free just buy a $5 souvenir wine glass and enjoy tasting a variety great Oklahoma wines.

This year Dad has a new Strawberry wine he is hoping to get some opinions on. Also, there are some grape vines for sale: Cynthiana, Merlot, Amercan Lambrusco & Leon Millot. It is very diffcult to find a nursery that will sell wine grapevines for Fall planting, so if you are wanting to plant a home vineyard... bring your truck on out to the winery. You can probably buy your vines for less than the cost of shipping them from most nurseries.

If you would prefer working on someone else's wine grape harvest than celebrating our's... Tidal School Vineyards will be having their own grape harvest event. If you are interesting in helping to harvest their Cabernet Franc grapes, just stop by their winery events pageand sign up: http://www.tidalschool.com/winery-events.htm The cost will be $25 per person.

Lincoln County To Vote on Local Liquor-by-the-Drink

Oklahoma's Age Old Question - Liquor By The Drink

Lincoln County voters will consider whether to join 42 other counties in Oklahoma where liquor by the drink is legal. on Tuesday, Lincoln County commissioners passed a resolution to hold the election.

The Lincoln County Grape Growers Association has agreed to pay the estimated $6,500 to $7,500 in costs for the special election.

Association president Don Neal says if the county is going to promote tourism it makes sense that restaurants be allowed to sell the association's products.

Liquor by the Drink was defeated by a 65-percent majority when it was last considered in 1986. However, with the recent growth of several new wineries in the county (like Sparks, StableRidge, Tidal School & Greenfield), local grape growers and wine makers are hoping that voters will support their efforts to boost tourism this time.

Wine Bloggers Let It Flow For Katrina Relief

Let It Flow The Sweet Taste of Charity

Beau, the wine blog guru over at basicJuice is leading an effort among wine bloggers to encourage their readers to 'Let it flow' - for Katrina's victims.

To participate in Beau's relief effort, take the money you typically spend on wine and beer (for a week, a month or even a year) and donate it to the victims of Hurricane Katrina. He suggests several charities:

Thousands of our countrymen are feared dead from the aftermath of this terrible hurricane and the survivors need our help desperately. Please do what you can to help.

Tulsa Today Article - Oklahoma Wineries Indulge

Tulsa Today has just released an excellent article on Oklahoma wineries. Here's a short clipping:
Picture yourself sitting high atop a second-story balcony with a spectacular view, watching a beautiful, Oklahoma sunset while sipping a bold, red Shiraz and listening to contemporary music. There’s no place in Oklahoma where you can indulge such sensory pleasures, you say? Oh, yes there is - and how...

The article goes on to mention loads of Oklahoma vineyards and wineries like: Greenfield Vineyard and Winery, Woodland Park Vineyard, StableRidge Winery, Nuyaka Creek Winery, Tres Suenos Winery, Moonfeathers Winery, Sparks Vineyard & Winery, Summerside Vineyards, Grape Ranch and Tidal School Vineyards.

They were even kind enough to put in a plug for our statewide winemaking organization's website at: www.OklahomaWines.org

We Won! - 2005 Okie Blog Awards

Oklahoma Bloggers - Best Commercial Blog AwardBest Commercial Blog of 2005

What an honor it is for me that Oklahoma Wine News has been named Best Commercial Blog by the Okie Bloggers. I am grateful indeed that you have accepted our local winery events news blog, and I want to give sincere thanks to Mike and everyone who participated. The nominations introduced me to a wealth of great blogs and demonstrated the incredibly compelling voices to be found in Oklahoma’s blogging community.

Okie bloggers are bringing local public dialogue back to a society that desperately needs to come together. The openness, insight and endurance that you demonstrate is opening up new threads of community to draw us closer together. I feel quite flattered and rather unworthy to be included with such a group of pioneers for the meager news postings of Oklahoma Wine News.

I accept the prize with profound gratitude on behalf of another group of struggling Oklahoma pioneers... the humble bunch of family farmers, bright-eyed young couples and world-weary professionals risking their backs and their savings to create a new kind of tourism industry in our state. Like bloggers, Oklahoma winemakers and vineyard owners are breaking new ground to shore up the threads that bind us together. Like bloggers they are passionate to work toward their own unique vision rather than another generic franchise. Together they are creating more opportunities to build vibrant local forums, where before there was only faceless global markets.

After contemplation, I conclude that this award, which I receive on behalf of those pioneers, is recognition that community, dialog and collaboration are the solutions to the crucial political and economic obstacles of our time - the need for men to overcome poverty and insecurity without resorting to becoming soulless corporate drones or voiceless laborers. I believe the creativity, energy and innovative spirit of Oklahoma's bloggers, entrepreneurs and winemakers, makes their voices quite worthy being heard.

I wonder what will be the impact of this new tool of blogging for building the spirit of dialog and community. Can the blogosphere become an ever-widening circle, constantly growing to reach further and include more...without our individuality becoming lost in the flood of humanity?

With the ever growing impact of globalization on our lives, jobs and communities, I think that local blogs and local wineries are likely to have a greater role to play reminding us of where we are in the world and reminding the world of what we have to offer as individuals. For me it has been an exciting thing to watch them both being born.

Once again, I am very grateful and very proud to see my name placed together with the names of so many outstanding Oklahoma bloggers. Thank you very much.
